Gregory Martin is a husband, father of three, content creator, animation historian, college instructor, and veteran of the U.S. Army.
I'm not the kind of person who thinks about age, and I'm fond of letting people know that "it's not the years, it's the miles." And I've certainly put on some miles! As an adventurer, a soldier, a professional, a teacher, and most of all, a husband and father.
My journey started while I was still in school, where I was...let's say a high performing under-achiever. A high school education didn't really mean much to me at the time, and I preferred experiencing as much of the world as I could instead. From rock climbing in Canada to week long hikes on the Susquehanna Trail, to getting certified as both a scuba diver and a firefighter; these were how I chose to spend my time.
At 17 I joined the Army as an Airborne Infantryman, and my computer knowledge and technical skills landed me in an operations role. I didn't join to sit behind a desk though, and changed my job after my initial enlistment to become a mechanic and crew member on CH-47 helicopters. I spent 7 years in the military, getting married and starting my family during that time.
After I got out, I went to college to get a Bachelor's Degree in Applied Mathematics, which I did while working a full time job and a part time job with a family at home. A family that was completed with the arrival of a third child my junior year in college. A week after graduation, I went to work for the U.S. Navy as a mathematician and test engineer, where I worked with several different groups in Special Operations. The job was rewarding, but the travel was a lot to manage, so after 5 years of it I finally moved to a desk as an Operations Research Analyst. And that's where I stayed.
At least until the 9 to 5 wore out its welcome and the kids were ready to make it on their own. That's when I closed my eyes, crossed my fingers, and decided to try my hand at something else. And that's what brings me to this point, doing what I can to see if I have a place in the world of creative writing!
